• Objective: apply optimization techniques to a research topic selected by a team, 15% of your final grade (progress report 2%, and final project report 13%).
– 1-3 members to form a team – Each team must submit a one-page progress report (2%), and at least 10-page final report (13%) – A template for report will be given in D2L. – You will need to learn and use linear programming software such as LINDO, Excel for your project. • Requirements for progress report (2% of your final grade): – Due on June 15, 10:59AM – The goal of this report is to identify your team members and project topic. – Form a team (1-3 members): please contact me if you have trouble to form a team; sometimes, based on the progress report, I will ask some students to merge their team.
– Should include the cover page and Section 1: problem description – you CANNOT copy the cases in the book; instead you must use your own language to describe the problem, and propose the questions in the problems – Make a good title for your project: for example, Optimal Using of Solar Energy for a Household – Topics: 1) Choose one case in Case 1-Case 11 from the book. Remember, if you choose some case that does not include appropriate data, you have to make up/collect data by yourself. Although some case does not include sensitivity and duality analysis, you will still need to include these two analyses. 2) Choose some problems in Chapter 3.8, 3.9, 3.10 or problem in pages 113125. If you choose problem from this part, you need my approval. Although many problems do not include sensitivity and duality analysis, you will need to study them in your project. Some of these problems are very short, you will add something interesting to make sure you final project will be at least 10 pages.

You will need my approval before you start your project if you choose this option. • Requirements for final report (13% of your final grade): – Due on July 5, 13:00PM – Should be at least 10 pages, cover page and codes/excel sheets are not included. – In Appendix, use one part to write down the contributions of each member – You must include these sections in your report: 1) Problem description; 2) modeling; 3) solution steps and algorithm code (in LINDO, or some other software); 4) Results analysis (use table or figure); 5) Sensitivity analysis and duality; 6) contributions, including contributions for this topic and future problems. ∗ Parts 1, 6 will have 1% each in your final grade. ∗ Part 2 (including code), 3, 4 will have 2% each in your final grade. ∗ Part 5 will be 3% in your final grade. ∗ Another 2% for your style, references, figures, tables, etc. – Requirements of sensitivity and duality analysis: (1) Sensitivity analysis: change at least two coefficients in your objective function, and carefully explain their corresponding economic interpretations (2) Change at least two RHS parameters, and do sensitivity analysis to check their changing interval, in which current basis remains optimal (3) Find the dual of your LP formulation (if your problem have more than 5 variables or 5 constraints, you do not need to write the dual), and study the shadow prices for at least two RHS parameters based on (2) and also explain their corresponding economic interpretations – (shadow price information obtained from LINDO or Excel) (4) Please add your code in the final project (excel: copy your input screen, and results screen)
