The doctor suspects septicemia and begins efforts to raise the womans blood pressure. He orders a sputum culture and begins IV antibiotics. Her husband tells the doctor that the woman had had the flu but had recovered a couple of days ago. The doctor orders X-rays and finds that the lymph nodes of the mediastinum are greatly enlarged. He immediately clears the patients room of all but nonessential personnel and orders everyone to take extra biohazard precautions when dealing with the woman. He changes the antibiotic to ciprofloxacin but despite his heroic efforts the woman dies within hours of being admitted. The sputum culture was positive for long Gram positive rods.
